The Peninsula Hotel, London

Day and night time fire safety for Deaf people

The Peninsula London is a luxury, 5-star hotel in the heart of Belgravia, London.

The hotel was opened in June 2024. The design and build of the hotel had been carefully planned to harmonise with the surrounding heritage buildings – bringing together modern convenience with classic style.

With 190 guests rooms and suites, plus dining, spa and event spaces, the Peninsula London offers a thoroughly well-designed, stylish and comfortable place for visitors to stay.

The Challenge

Hotels have a responsibility to ensure the safety of all guests in the event of a fire. That includes the millions of people in the UK who are Deaf or who have hearing loss that means they can’t hear fire alarms.

As a responsible accommodation provider that has its guests’ interests at heart, the Peninsula Hotel group recognised the safety of Deaf and hard of hearing people as a priority.

A proven, compliant system was required; one that would alert Deaf or hard of hearing people in the event that a fire alarm went off in the building, in order help safeguard everyone on site — day and night.

The solution would need to be suitable for anyone in the building with hearing loss, including people with hearing aids that would be removed for sleep.

It would need to be portable (so that it could be taken into specific allocated bedrooms by Deaf/hard of hearing visitors) and be able to wake room occupants during the night-time.

The Solution

The solution provided to London’s Peninsula Hotel was our radio-based, emergency fire alarm and messaging system, Deaf Alerter. The provision included a number of Night Alerter devices.

  • Day-time solution: Handheld devices known as ‘alerters’ were provided, which can be carried during the day-time by people who are Deaf or have hearing loss. Should a fire alarm sound on-site, a notification would be sent to each of these devices (which would vibrate strongly to notify the carrier – with on-screen notifications detailing evacuation instructions.)
  • Night-time solution: ‘Night Alerters’ were also provided, which could be easily set up in any room in the hotel. If the fire alarm sounded during the night, then a vibrating pillow pad (placed under the room occupant’s pillow) would vibrate strongly to help wake the sleeping guest, and the Night Alerter would flash brightly.

The portable nature of Night Alerters means that hotels can easily deploy the equipment to guests’ bedrooms even if requirements aren’t announced ahead of arrival.

Plus, guests aren’t limited to specific rooms, because Night Alerter doesn’t require any hardwiring and can be used in any room in the building.

As well as being highly practical, and supporting health and safety, the Night Alerters are visually well-designed and stylish – supporting the luxury aesthetic of the Peninsula London. Night Alerter units are designed to double up as alarm clocks, helping them blend effortlessly into any room until they are needed.

The Result

The Deaf Alerter system provided the perfect solution to help the Peninsula London meet its health and safety and equality obligations.

The entire hotel is now covered by our Deaf Alerter system. This means that Deaf or hard of hearing people can enter the building and be confident that in the event of an emergency they will receive notifications – either via an Alerter carried with them during the day time, or a Night Alerter set up in their hotel room at night time.

The result is a safer environment for everyone on-site.
