25 years of emergency communication technology for disabled and Deaf people

Sep 30, 2025

Alerter Group is celebrating its 25th anniversary providing technology to help disabled and Deaf people stay safe during emergencies.

For a quarter of a century, Alerter Group has supported fire safety by providing reliable, radio-based emergency communication – helping ensure that no building occupant is left unaware or unable to communicate with responders during an emergency.

The company’s two flagship product, Refuge Alerter and Deaf Alerter, play an important role in helping organisations achieve compliance with fire safety regulations and evacuation planning requirements:

  • Refuge Alerter is a radio-based Emergency Voice Communication (EVC) system, enabling two-way communication between building management and refuge points. Used in a wide variety of buildings, and particularly suitable for projects requiring retrofitting, it is compliant with BS 5839-9.
  • Deaf Alerter is a radio-based fire alarm alerting system designed to ensure Deaf and hard of hearing people are notified if a fire alarm activates. This BS 5839-1-compliant system uses vibrating pagers and visual devices to notify users if the fire alarm has been triggered.

Alerter Group started life back in 2000 with a single customer. 25 years later, its lifesaving technology has been utilised by hundreds of different companies, in thousands of buildings across the UK.

Chris Haseldine, CEO of Alerter Group, explains:

“Alerter Group’s story started with a real compliance challenge — a fire alarm system that wasn’t suitable for every building user.

“Back in the late 90s, our old sister company was working with an organisation where an employee was unable to hear audible fire alarms. Recognising the risk, we developed Deaf Alerter to support the safety of Deaf and hard of hearing people.

“Since then, we’ve extended our expertise to include Refuge Alerter – a wireless EVC system that removes the cost and disruption of installing cables, while helping ensure safe evacuation for people with disabilities or reduced mobility.

“We’re proud to have helped so many organisations make their buildings safer and more inclusive.”
